Syracuse University has a long tradition = of=20 welcoming international students to its campus, and we're eager to = expand=20 the cultural diversity of the student population even more. To be admitted to Syracuse University,=20 international students must:
Key topics:
Regular Decision is the plan you generally use when you = apply in=20 the beginning of your final year in secondary school. Completed=20 applications must be postmarked by January 1. Applications = are=20 accepted after January 1 if space is available in the = program to=20 which you have applied. Early Decision should be seriously considered if = Syracuse=20 University is your first choice. As an Early Decision candidate, = you agree=20 to enroll at Syracuse University if admitted to your preferred = college at=20 SU. You may apply to other colleges and universities with the=20 understanding that you will withdraw these applications if you are = admitted to Syracuse University. Completed applications must be = postmarked=20 by November 15. We encourage transfer students to apply under the January = 1=20 Regular Decision plan deadline to receive full consideration for = admission=20 and housing. Enrollment in some colleges and programs may be = limited.=20 Transfer applications will be evaluated by the Admissions = Committee as=20 they are received and become complete. Students wishing to apply for admission for the spring = (January)=20 semester are encouraged to submit their applications early in the = fall=20 (mid to late October). As soon as all necessary credentials and documents are = received,=20 international applicants are reviewed by the Admissions Committee = and=20 notified of the admission decision by email and letter. All first-year applicants, with the exception = of those=20 living in China, must take the SAT or the ACT, including the = optional=20 Writing Test (if available in your country). SAT Subject Tests = are not=20 required. Transfer students who have completed at least one full = academic=20 year at an institution of higher learning are not required to take = the=20 SAT. In addition, all international undergraduate applicants to = Syracuse=20 University whose first language is not English must take the TOEFL = (Test=20 of English as a Foreign Language) or the IELTS (International = English=20 Language Testing System). Please go to Eng= lish=20 Proficiency Requirements for more information. In addition to what is required of United = States=20 citizens or permanent residents, international applicants are = required to=20 submit proof of sufficient funding. International Students are = not=20 eligible for need-based financial aid. Any international applicant = who=20 requires an F-1 Student Visa to come to Syracuse is required to = submit=20 documentation that demonstrates the ability to fund his or her = education=20 for one full academic year. The U.S. dollar amount for applicants = to=20 either the spring 2009 semester or the fall 2009 semester must = total=20 $49,224. Acceptable proof includes, for privately sponsored = applicants, a=20 signed letter of support from the bank that includes the U.S. = dollar=20 amount of support and certified bank statements, which indicate = that the=20 sponsor has sufficient funds to meet your first-year expenses at = Syracuse=20 University per the University's current estimate of $49,224. The = certified=20 bank statement need not show the total amount of funds in the = account.=20 Rather, it must state that the account has funds to meet your = first-year=20 expenses at Syracuse University of $49,224. A statement of income = or=20 earnings does not constitute proof of sufficient funds.=20 Government-sponsored applicants must submit a certified copy of = the award=20 letter that includes the U.S. dollar amount of the award per year, = the=20 duration of the award, and a list of expenses covered by the = award. All=20 international students must complete the Inte= rnational=20 Applicant Form (PDF). Photocopies of financial = documentation are=20 acceptable. You may fax documents to 011-315-443-8427. Please = include a=20 copy of your passport with the financial documents you send = us. Be=20 sure to write your name, date of birth, and name of the program to = which=20 you are applying on all documents you send. In addition to the = above=20 expenses, international students must plan on expenses for the = winter=20 break and summer months. These additional personal and living = expenses are=20 estimated at $3,500. If you are returning to your home country or = are=20 traveling to another location, you need to anticipate those travel = expenses. English = Proficiency=20 Requirements: All undergraduate international applicants to = Syracuse=20 University whose first language is not English must prove they are = proficient in the English language. The TOEFL (Test of English = as a=20 Foreign Language) or IELTS (International English Language Testing = System)=20 is required of all undergraduate applicants whose native language = is not=20 English, whether they are applying as a first-year or a transfer = student.=20 The minimum TOEFL score required on the written test is 550 (600 = if=20 applying to the Newhouse School of Public Communications). The = minimum=20 TOEFL score required on the computerized test is 213 (250 if = applying to=20 the Newhouse School of Public Communications). The minimum TOEFL = score=20 required on the internet-based test (iBT) is 80 (100 if applying = to the=20 Newhouse School of Public Communications). The minimum IELTS score = is 6.5.=20 Applicants to the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications = should=20 achieve a score of at least 7.0. A student can also satisfy the = English=20 language proficiency requirement by attending our English Language = Institute (E.L.I.) and completing Level 4 at the Institute. For = more=20 information on the E.L.I., click here. It is possible to have the TOEFL or IELTS requirement waived in = certain=20 situations. For example, if a first-year applicant attends a = school in the=20 U.S. or one outside the U.S. that is based on the American system = of=20 education, if the language of instruction for a student's entire = schooling=20 has been English language, or if a student has strong SAT critical = reading=20 and writing scores, the requirement may be waived. A transfer = student who=20 has been studying at a college or university in the United States = for at=20 least one full academic year and has a strong record of academic=20 performance may also have the English language requirement waived. = However, the decision to waive the standard requirement is at the=20 discretion of the Admissions Committee. We, therefore, recommend = that all=20 students whose native language is not English take either the = TOEFL or=20 IELTS test as part of the application process. International applicants can be granted = Conditional=20 Admission to Syracuse University if the academic requirements = for=20 admission have been met, but there is:
Conditionally admitted students are not considered fully = admitted to=20 the University and will not be issued the SEVIS I-20 form (the = form that=20 is needed to obtain the F-1 Student Visa) until the University = receives=20 the necessary English proficiency credentials and/or the necessary = proof=20 of sufficient funding. A student will remain conditionally = admitted until=20 these terms have been satisfied. We cannot guarantee space will = still be=20 available at the time a student meets the condition. Students who have completed academic work = outside the=20 U.S. must also provide official academic credentials as well as = English=20 translations of the documents. If only one document is = available, we=20 will accept notarized or certified copies of the original = document. If=20 translations are needed, it is the student's responsibility to = have the=20 credentials translated by a reputable translation and evaluation = service.=20 Syracuse University will not provide translations for the student. = A key=20 to the marking system or grading scale should also be included if = it is=20 not indicated on the transcript. In addition, all transfer = applicants=20 should provide course descriptions of all work completed so that a = credit=20 evaluation can be completed. View=20 a listing of selected required credentials and advanced credit=20 policies. (PDF) Student Visas = and=20 Immigration: If you are at another institution in the = United States=20 in F-1 immigration status: Your school will need to transfer your SEVIS record to Syracuse = University by 'Releasing Your Record.' This would happen on a date = that=20 you and the international student advisor at your current school = agree=20 upon. Most importantly, to maintain your legal status, you must be = released=20 and Syracuse University must issue a 'Transfer Pending I-20' no = later than=20 60 days after your program end date (likely the last day of final = exams or=20 the graduation date at your previous school). You and your current International Student Advisor can notify = Syracuse=20 University of your intent to transfer by accessing http://internati= onal.syr.edu/transfer_to_su.htm.=20 This will take you to the "Transfer-In Form" which has to be = completed by=20 you and your advisor at your current school. *It is also important to = remember that=20 if you are going back to your home country between the time you = finish=20 at your current school and the date you are coming to Syracuse=20 University, you need to enter the United States with the I-20 = of=20 Syracuse University. If you are going home and your current = F-1 visa=20 is valid, you do not need to apply for a new visa. However, if = your F-1=20 visa is expired and you are leaving the U.S. and re-entering, = you do=20 need to apply for a new F-1 Student Visa. See the directions = below for=20 applying for a Nonimmigrant Visa. If you have been studying outside the United = States=20 prior to coming to Syracuse University: You will need an I-20 (Certificate of Eligibility for = Nonimmigrant=20 Student Status) in order to apply for your student visa. You would = do this=20 at the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate. When you receive the = I-20 from=20 the Slutzker Center for International Services, directions will be = provided on exactly how you apply for the visa and what documents = you=20 need, but for further information you can visit the Slutzker = Center=20 web site. If your spouse and/or children would be accompanying you to = Syracuse,=20 please complete the Dependent=20 Information Form. For additional information for international students, please = visit the=20 FAQ = page for=20 international students. Please contact us by phone at = 315-443-3611, or by=20 fax at 315-443-4226, for additional information. |
